PRIME

Partnerships in International Medical Education

Ethiopia

Ethiopian DelegatesDuring 2017 PRIME tutors from the UK and Kenya delivered teaching in whole person medicine and family medicine to residents from the government university and a group of around 30 Christian doctors. The CMDA conference also included an opportunity to introduce PRIME more widely.

PRIME teams visited Ethiopia several times during 2016 with varied programmes from training faculty members at a Christian medical school in Addis Ababa, to teaching family medicine residents and building a national PRIME group. The teams also contributed to a medical ethics conference for medical professionals at which representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Medical Association were present.

Several individuals from Ethiopia attended the PRIME Global Missions Healthcare Pre Conference (GMHC) programme and the PRIME stream at the main GMHC conference in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2016.

PRIME has delivered basic training and faculty development at medical and nursing schools as well as providing DVD-based teaching materials and handbooks to University lecturers and others to help spread the concepts and practices promoted by PRIME throughout the country. PRIME personnel have had discussions with the General Secretary of the Evangelical Churches Association in Ethiopia concerning the need for training pastors in understanding health issues, especially mental health. We also have strong links with the East Africa School of Medical Education. We are looking forward to developing more collaborative projects with partners in the several Ethiopian University Medical Schools and other groups working in primary care.

“Excellent preparation, presentation and teaching method; one of the best trainings I have attended in a long, long time!” Medical Educator, Ethiopia.
